The Pakistan Research Institute for Sustainable Media (PRISM) welcomes the signing of “the Sindh Protection of Journalists and Other Media Practitioners Bill-2021” into law by the Governor of Sindh Imran Ismail on July 28, 2021. This law can be seen as a step in the right direction to where safety and security of the journalists and media practitioners is concerned.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has taken journalists Amir Mir and Imran Shafqat into custody, Geo News reported Saturday, citing sources.
Mir was picked up by the FIA’s cybercrime cell earlier today when he left his home for office. Sources said that the FIA personnel took the journalist and his car.

This baseline research is part of a rapid assessment of the key factors preventing media unions in Pakistan accepting the growing number of young journalists, particularly digital and women media practitioners, as members and defending their labour rights.
Despite the existence of a long-established and extensive constitutional and legal framework, Pakistan’s media workers face a redundant and ineffective labour law system that is failing to protect essential worker rights. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and its affiliate the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) said there is a dire need to review and overhaul the legal framework governing the rights of media workers in Pakistan where it is chronically failing them.
